What Happens If the Abortion Pill Doesn’t Work?

No one talks about this part, but it happens more often than people realize.

The hard truth is that the abortion pill regimen does not work every time, and in some cases, the pregnancy continues. In others, the process stops and or the abortion is incomplete.

This occurs more often when someone takes the pills later, without medical supervision or medical follow-up. Everyone’s experience looks different. Here are the most common signs you need to seek medical care:

  • Bleeding that never starts or suddenly stops

  • Ongoing pregnancy symptoms like nausea or breast tenderness

  • Severe cramping that doesn’t ease

  • Fever, chills, or unusual discharge

  • A feeling that something is off, even if you can’t explain it

What if the pregnancy is still viable?

It can be surprising to learn that the pregnancy continued. If this happens, a medical provider may recommend follow-up care, blood work, or additional monitoring. What matters most is that you understand what is happening before deciding what comes next.

When should you seek immediate care or go to the emergency room if you experience?

If you are experiencing:

  • Heavy bleeding that soaks through more than two pads an hour

  • Severe abdominal pain that does not improve

  • Fever, fainting, or dizziness
